About

I am a researcher at the Centre for Inequality and Social Policy at the University of Bremen. Building on the disciplines of political sociology and political economy, my research pivots around the transformation of the tax and the welfare state including their historical roots and contemporary challenges. Currently, I am working on two main challenges affecting the transformation of the tax and the welfare state with one of the being the role of climate changes and new environmental risks for the welfare and the tax state. While the green transformation has certainly received much attention by sociologists and political scientists, the social dimension of this transformation has largely been neglected. However, many of these policies such as carbon taxes clearly change the redistributive capacity of the tax state as they impose higher costs on lower income household and regions. In my research I highlight the political dynamics driving the turn to carbon taxes and green subsidies as well as the societal perceptions thereof. Generally, my research is empirically grounded and characterized by a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods. My research has been published in journals such as Politics & Society, Journal of European Public Policy, and New Political Economy. I am an open-minded person and enjoy connecting to current academic and public debates. To reach out to scholars and society, I have been on research stays abroad, organized workshops and participated in several outreach activities. Among others, I spent a year at the Center for European Studies at Harvard and in my current department, I am responsible for the organization of the “Workshop on Inequality and Social Policy”, which brings together and disseminates interdisciplinary perspectives on important findings in this field.
