Abstract

How inclusive are European welfare systems towards individuals in situation of international mobility? In this paper, we aim to provide an original and comprehensive comparison of the regimes of social protection that EU Member States offer to foreign residents and nationals residing abroad. Drawing on an original dataset within the framework of the “Migration, Transnationalism and Social Protection in (post-) crisis Europe” (MiTSoPro) project, the paper will seek to rank European countries according to the level of inclusiveness or exclusiveness towards mobile individuals looking at the array of social benefits that they offer across the following policy areas: pensions, healthcare, guaranteed minimum resources, family benefits and unemployment benefits.  Relying on this data, we will propose a typology of transnational social protection regimes.
