Abstract

The world, and the region, has seen a surge in conservative attitudes. Recent studies (Duffy, Campbell and Skinner) show how attitudes and ideology among the youngest generations have been developing across a sharp gender divide. In Latin America, the advances of progressive agendas have been met with stark conservative backlash, both in the electoral and the public arenas. Papers in this panel explore the conditions, consequences, and responses to the conservative backlash in the region, including the growing support to authoritarianism among the young, the negative and violent responses women in politics elicit in countries where violence against women is high, and the relationship between religion and nativism.
