Abstract

Democratic societies are currently undergoing significant changes due to the intersecting crises, including insecurity, climate crisis, and misinformation (Moore et al 2021). Consequently, there is concern regarding the health of democratic societies and particularly the role of children and young people. This panel focuses on children’s and young people’s development of democratic values, their perceptions of the future, and their identity formation in the context of intersecting crises. Thus, this panel asks: How do students imagine and perceive the future? How do young people discuss climate change? How do young people form their democratic values and political identities? The presentations in this panel address these questions by reporting findings from qualitative and quantitative studies with children and young people in diverse contexts.
