Abstract

Political equality may be an important part of the ideal of democracy, but empirical studies often show inequalities in political participation, political interest, and political efficacy related to gender and other demographic categories. This panel aims to explore the roots of disparities and offers empirical and conceptual insights geared toward fostering equity in political engagement and participation. We will discuss our current understanding of the role of experiences, competencies, cognitions, and intersectionality related to political interest, political efficacy, and political participation.
