Abstract

Against a backdrop of democratic backsliding, social and political polarization, exclusion, and conflict, this panel engages with a range of theoretical and empirical perspectives on civic education. The potential of civic education to strengthen and sustain democracies attracts the attention and interest of policymakers, scholars, and educators alike. Exploring civic education practices, and policies, alongside policy recommendations and the viewpoints of diverse stakeholders, we ask: What is meaningful to learn? What is meaningful to teach and how? How is civic education addressing emerging challenges? What are the implications of and for educational innovation?
