Abstract

This panel investigates the multifaceted landscape of political representation in the context of the European Union (EU). The papers delve into challenges such as the democratic deficit, regional disparities, and transparency and accountability related challenges. They contribute to historicising the crisis of political representation within the European context, critical discuss challenges to political representation at EU level, including the lack of a transnational public sphere and participation. Papers provide insights on the Europeanisation of national political parties, analyse drivers to the (non)application of the Spitzenkandidaten system, and reflect on deliberative processes as a future avenue for better representation.
