The Revival of Social Europe?

Abstract

The last two legislatures of the European Parliament, and the corresponding European Commission mandates, have been mainly described in scholarship as an era where the "revival" of Social Europe has gained momentum. The papers in this panel take different angles to dissect these dynamics and assess whether the actual policies adopted under these political auspices hold the promise of enhancing social rights Europe wide. In the wake of the upcoming European elections, where a change of winds is expected, it important to put the recent "revival" of Social Europe in historical perspective and shed light on what may drive the ups and downs of the EU social agenda. Furthermore, the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR), which has served as a compass for rebalancing the EU socio-economic governance since 2017, is examined in detail. This implies looking at the possible gaps between the principles asserts and the way in which they are framed and dealt with in national polities.
