Beyond immigration politics: The political relevance of emigration and circular migration in the EU

Abstract

In the last decades, a large literature on the political consequences of immigration has emerged. In contrast to immigration, other forms of migration such as emigration, circular migration or return migration have received much less attention. In the context of European politics, this lack in the literature is problematic as many EU member and European countries first and foremost experience migration as a large outflow of their citizens with many of them staying abroad long term. Building on recently published research agendas and studies on the politics of emigration (and generally migration beyond immigration), this panel welcomes and includes papers addressing citizens’ and political elites’ attitudes toward the freedom of the movement beyond immigration, the role of emigration in voting behavior and party strategies and policy making at the national and EU-level addressing the causes and consequences of emigration.
