Glasgow is easily accessible by air, with many international carriers flying into Glasgow International Airport. There are two further airports which offer a less direct route to Glasgow city centre and the University, but could be used to travel to the Conference:
Glasgow Prestwick Airport, which is 22 miles south west of the University of Glasgow. This airport has its own rail station and operates a bus service to city centre.
Edinburgh International Airport, which is 42 miles east of the University of Glasgow. From here it is a 48 minute train journey to Glasgow (trains depart every 15 minutes during peak hours).
Glasgow can be reached by train: there are intercity links to/from all major cities, with frequent services to/from Edinburgh (50 minutes) and London (5 hours).
From Carlisle, Newcastle and the south, exit then M74 on to the M73, joining the M8 at the ‘Old Monkland’ junction. Exits from the M8 for the University are J18 if travelling from the south, Edinburgh and the north and J19 if coming from Glasgow Airport and the west.

Travelling by taxi from Glasgow Airport to the city centre takes around 15-20 minutes, dependent upon traffic. The approximate charge is £25-30. The ECPR has negotiated a 15% discount with Glasgow Taxis for trips from and to Glasgow Airport. Glasgow Taxis are the largest supplier of licensed taxis in Glasgow, with a fleet of over 900 taxis. You can pre-book a taxi at the discounted rate by calling +44 (0) 141 429 7070 using code CM7 for journeys from Glasgow Airport to the city centre or code CM5 from the city centre to Glasgow Airport.
The nearest station to Glasgow Airport is ‘Paisley Gilmour Street’, which is connected to the Airport by the ‘McGill’s bus service’ number 757 or a short taxi journey. Alternatively the ‘First 500 Glasgow Shuttle’ (see below for details) will take you to Glasgow Queen Street or Glasgow Central Train Stations.
Travelling from Glasgow Airport into the city centre by bus is easy as there are several services that go to the main bus station ‘Buchanan Street’. All the bus stands at Glasgow Airport are located just outside the main terminal building. The options are:
‘First 500 Glasgow Shuttle - Glasgow City Centre’ leaves from Stand 1. This bus departs approximately every 10 minutes for Buchanan Street Bus Station, also stopping at ‘Glasgow Central’ and ‘Glasgow Queen Street’ train stations.
‘First 747 Air Link - Glasgow Airport to City Centre’ leaves from Stand 6, also stopping at ‘Braehead’ and ‘Partick Interchange’.
From Carlisle, Newcastle and the south, exit then M74 on to the M73, joining the M8 at the ‘Old Monkland’ junction. Exits from the M8 for the University are J18 if travelling from the south, Edinburgh and the north and J19 if coming from Glasgow Airport and the west.
Other main routes serving the University include Great Western Road (A82, north of campus), Clydeside Expressway (A814, south) and Byres Road (B808, west).
There are a limited number of pay and display parking spaces available along University Avenue and surrounding streets which allow parking for a limited time during peak hours. The largest car park close by that offers daily rates can be accessed from Great George Street and is directly across from Lilybank Gardens.
The Main campus of the University of Glasgow (Gilmorehill Campus, Adam Smith Building, University Avenue, Glasgow G12 8QQ) is located in the west end of Glasgow, three miles from the city centre. It can be easily accessed via the subway (Hillhead stop) or local buses (Routes 4 and 4A) from the city centre.
Travel Pass: The ECPR has negotiated a heavily discounted travel pass for all participants at the General Conference. The four-day pass covers the dates of *3-6 September and can be used on various methods of transport across the city, including the subway system, bus, overland rail and ferry. It can also even be used to travel as far out of the city as Loch Lomond (North) and the Islands of Arran and Bute (West), meaning that participants really can make the most of their stay in Scotland. In order to secure the conference discount you will be sent booking instructions at the time of registering for the conference.
