City and Parliament Tour

Hungary’s tumultuous history – the glorious eras as well as the gloomy years all left their mark on the city. Szabadság square was designed and constructed in the most prosperous time of the country’s history as a financial center of the Austro-Hungarian Empire although it has always been a historical center of gravity that symbolically encapsulates Hungarians’ turbulent story in pursuit of freedom. Szabadság tér (Liberty Square) today is a park invigorated by playful children and at the same time is an imprint of past struggles.

On this tour, the legends and memories of this historically- packed place will be revealed through stories from the Hungarian national revival in the 1840s until the democratic transition in the 1990s. We will visit the last Soviet memorial in the city, learn about the heroic saviors of the Holocaust, and spot the bullet holes of the deadly 1956 firing on Kossuth square. We will make otherwise mute buildings confess the secrets and stories of their past by deciphering their peculiar symbolism and hear what it was like for the average citizen to go for groceries during the greatest hyperinflation of all times.

The tour will continue in the House of Parliament with a guided tour through the building that includes the Holy Crown and the Dome Hall.

Walk in the Jewish District

Budapest is well-known for the largest synagogue of Europe. But behind the spectacular neo-romantic arches lies a dense and vigorous Jewish Quarter characterized by a colorful religious life and recently by ruin pubs, chief havens of young and ever-young Budapesters by night.

Until the Second World War, Budapest was home to hundreds of thousands of Jewish people of various backgrounds. The extension of civil liberties to Jewish people matched with increasing assimilation to their Christian compatriots until the First World War. Following the trauma of the great war, the blissful days rapidly vanished until the disenfranchisement tragically culminated in the Holocaust. Following the fall of communism – a period likewise marked by further decline - a diverse and creative cultural life has reemerged from the ashes: new festivals, concerts, cafés, delis and markets, art projects and fairs are mushrooming alongside the revived Jewish cultural life.

Highlights: the ‘Jewish Triangle’ (Dohány, Kazinczy and Rumbach Street Synagogues), Remains of the ghetto wall, Jewish Quarter Delis
