What to see

The Tyrolean capital Innsbruck enchants with its medieval charm, rugged alpine scenery, and spectacular mountain views.

Located in the heart of the Alps, in the Inn Valley between Germany and Italy, Innsbruck attracts up to two million tourists every year.

Playing host to nearly 35,000 students, the third-largest university city in Austria, with two universities and several universities of applied sciences, is a vibrant place for intellectual exchange and cultural encounters.

Explore Innsbruck with the Sightseer Innsbruck, hop-on hop-off bus tour, or with a guided tour. For even more excitement why not try a Themed tour.

Explore Innsbruck by bike along the Inn River towards Völs or towards Hall – the mountains all around as a constant companion; or through Rapoldipark along the Sill River to the Tiflis Bridge and through the Saggen district with its beautiful villas and gardens back to the city centre.

The Golden Roof – Goldenes Dachl, built in 1420 as the residence of the Tyrolean sovereigns, is Innsbruck’s best known and most visible landmark. A late-gothic alcove balcony in the Old Town, it's covered with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles.

To mark the beginning of the era led by Niklar Türing the Elder on behalf of the German king and future emperor Maximilian I, the magnificent bay window was added between 1497/98 and 1500.

In 2011, the Bergisel gained another architectural attraction: the Tyrol-Panorama Museum, a modern addition to the Tiroler Landesmuseen. The museum takes visitors on an exciting journey through Tyrolean history, leading up to the battle between Napoleonic troops and Tyrolean rebels in 1809 which took place on the exact spot the Tyrol-Panaroma Museum is located today.

The museum's centrepiece, a 1,000-square metre 360-degree panoramic painting, retraces these dramatic events. The artwork, created in 1896, also documents many elements that make up the myth of Tyrol.

Connected to the Tyrol-Panorama Museum by an underground passage, the Kaiserjägermuseum documents Tyrolean military history, linking the museum's historical collection to the dramatic events at Bergisel.

Picturesquely perched on a hill high above Innsbruck, Ambras Castle is the focal point of a delightful English landscape garden with duck pond and playground. It is one of the main attractions in Innsbruck.

Its cultural and historic significance is inseparable from the personality of Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595), who promoted the arts and sciences as a true Renaissance prince. He established the magnificent Ambras collections and had a museum facility built in the lower castle to house them, designed according to modern criteria from the time.
