Bridging the East-West Divide

  #ECPRHouseLectures

House Lecture – The Stein Rokkan Edition

Organised by Charles University

Tuesday 25 May,  17:00 CEST

Though typically held each year at our Joint Sessions of Workshops, we're delighted to have made the 2021 Stein Rokkan lecture FREE and open to the ECPR community at large, as part of our House Lecture series.

Echoing the inspiration behind the project, this virtual lecture, organised by Charles University, gathered an impressive line-up of speakers to explore yet another topical matter in the discipline – bridging the East-West divide.

In this lecture, we:

  • Explored the extent to which the East and the West are artificial constructs
  • Considered how these are used as shortcuts to simplify the complex reality of contemporary democracy
  • Discussed how we can move beyond this outdated paradigm
  • Reflected on ways to balance out general trends and unique features of the Central European region

Speakers

  • Lenka Bustikova Arizona State University
  • Ondrej Cisar Charles University
  • Fernando Casal Bertoa University of Nottingham
  • Zsolt Enyedi Central European University/Oxford University
  • Petra Guasti Charles University
  • Milada Vachudova UNC Chapel Hill

The House Lectures in brief

In line with our overarching mission, the House Lectures aim to help break down barriers in European political science, to provide a platform for discourse and to reach out beyond academe and shine a light on the work of our discipline.

  • Inspired by Harbour House, our HQ in the UK, which provides both a literal and metaphorical ‘home’ for the ECPR community
  • Delivering insightful lectures on the hottest topics in political science and beyond
  • Each followed by extended Q&A sessions
  • Open to all, ECPR members and non-members
